Industrial Engineering Technology

Training in Industrial Engineering opens doors for a variety of careers working with mechanical systems, HVAC and boilers, robotics, electrical circuits, fluid control systems and advanced conveyors. Students receive several industry-recognized certifications, including OSHA 10, while learning in a high-tech, hands-on environment.

Program options

Industrial Engineering Technology offers a technical certificate and associate of applied science degree option. Several IET classes are offered in a hybrid-online format.

The technical certificate is a one-year program. Students will have the opportunity to achieve Forklift operator certification and OSHA 10 General Industry certification.

The associate of applied science degree, is a two-year program that contains technical and general education courses. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills needed to install, service and repair machines and equipment common to all industries.

Students completing the Industrial Engineering Technology Program have several career opportunities including working with mechanical systems, such as HVAC and Boilers, to advanced automated systems including robotics, advanced conveyors, and fluid control systems. Technicians may assist in trouble-shooting, repairs, reworks, and preventive maintenance. They perform a variety of tasks including preparing tools, using test equipment, interpreting procedures and schematics, and providing documentation.

FHTC Industrial Engineering Technology students have been successfully placed and have gained the reputation as model employees in regional companies including Thermal Ceramics, Kansa Corp, Modern Air Conditioning, Services Unlimited, Shelly Electric, Schumann Electric, Stouse, Altec, Camoplast, Simmons Pet Food, American Eagle and numerous school and university maintenance departments.

Career opportunities include:

  • Power Plants
  • Manufacturing Facilities
  • Educational Facilities
  • Industrial Service
  • Maintenance Consulting
  • Residential Service

IET now offers hybrid-online courses at the Peaslee Technical Institute in Lawrence. These hybrid courses allow students to complete all coursework, quizzes and exams online. Each class will meet two evenings a week at Peaslee Tech to complete hands-on assessment and training requirements.

Students taking IET courses will be able to receive their Technical Certificate in two years at Peaslee Tech, attending as half-time students.

Additional IET courses will be available at the start of each semester.

Students in the IET program become a close-knit group and enjoy having fun while learning. The student can expect to gain the knowledge and skills in several areas including electrical, automation, mechanics, solidworks drawing, and more. With these skills, our graduates are equipped to be a well-rounded employee and can succeed in any environment. The IET program provides a diversity in career paths that is often hard to find in other programs of study.

I began my career at FHTC in 2008, and I am also a graduate of the IET program. Prior to my teaching career, I was lead man at Martin Marietta rock quarry. I became a student at FHTC while working at Martin Marietta and was promoted to an electrician, which allowed me to apply the classroom concepts to the real-world working environment. During my college years, I also worked at a local production company, Camso, as a maintenance technician where I held positions as a shift supervisor and team leader.

I became interested in teaching because I wanted to ensure that students leaving this program would be prepared for the industry. My mission as an instructor is to make sure that when a student leaves here, they have the skills to thrive in any industry.
